Match Report

Beaufort Bowls Match ReportA beautiful sunny day for our first league game of the season at Abergavenny.  There was a little spice added to the game with a few of our players being ex Abergavenny players, this was added to with the draw of Mathew Vale against his son Jack. Mathews rink of Clive Williams, Martin Doughty, Tony Musgrave and himself started slowly going 2-7 down after five, the slower pace of the green catching our guys out, it was a bit more respectable at 7-10 after ten and after fifteen ends they peeled 13-13, this led to a tense final quarter where the Beaufort boys edged the spoils 22-20. The rink of Nigel Harris, Tom Moodie, Darren O'Callaghan (Captain) and Gethin Hill had a better start 3-5 down at five and then led 10-7 at ten. They also peeled 12-12 after fifteen so another tense final quarter here and it looked as if Abergavenny would take the spoils as they went 14-19 ahead with only one end left but the Beaufort rink dug in and picked up a five to tie the rink 19-19.

Adrian Williams, Les Flowers, John Norris and Wayne Hooper also took a while to adjust to the slow pace and were 2-7 after five, they then dropped on it and tied 9-9 after ten. Abergavenny edged the third session to lead 12-15 after fifteen and pushed on in the final quarter to win 14-21. The final rink of Chris Denby, Chris Gilmour, Steve Godding and Peter Williams started well leading 6-1 after five and pushed on to 21-3 after ten with the third quarter fairly even the scoreboard moved to 23-6 and the Beaufort guys sealed the win 29-8.

So overall a very satisfying first competitive match picking up 11 points to 3 away from home, congratulations guys. A tougher week next week as all three teams will be in action with PG at home to Ely Valley, MBA away to Crickhowell and GBL at home to Pontypool, let's hope for more of the same weather and a great day for the club.
