Week 20/21

A long season is coming to a close, the ladies finished with a defeat at Blaina but a very good season for them. Our PG team also finished with a defeat at home to Barry Romilly 10-4. This weekend saw us have another successful tour to the Isle of Wight.  We started with a comfortable win at Totland Bay followed by a revenge win at Ventnor after suffering heavily there two years ago but I think the beer intake contributed to a defeat in our final game at Newport.  Another great weekend enjoyed by everyone, thank you to all tourists who help make it a great trip.

only thing left is club finals next weekend, good luck to all members still pushing for a club title.

Week 19

The ladies continued with their impressive form towards the end of the season with a 10-0 win at Gilwern and a 8-2 home win over Trelewis.  The mixed league final was played on Friday and our record in this competition is second to none and with a few stalwarts missing the final this year was just out of reach suffering a five shot defeat to Whitchurch on their own green.

Saturday saw us suffer a narrow one shot defeat to Abertillery who had a GBL side boosted by a number of experienced first team players.  In the big PG1 match against Cardiff it was nip and tuck down to the very last bowls and we were a little unfortunate to lose by five and only pick up two points.  We bounced back on the Sunday to beat Barry Athletic 12-2 but although mathematically it is still possible to pinch promotion it is likely that we will finish a creditable third place in Division 2 this year.

Weeks 17 & 18

Apologies for last week but a very busy time for me with the national finals going on and everything else so will try and catch up today.

The Nationals didn't go great for us but the guys should be proud to reach this stage of the competitions, Roger in the singles had a good win in his first game and suffered the dreaded one shot defeat in the quarter finals, almost a replica then of the senior pairs who also had a good win before losing to the eventual champions by one shot in the quarters.  We also had guys in both the county championship and senior county championship teams who competed in Llandod, the county team were beaten in the semi by Pembrokeshire and the seniors won their semi before being beaten in the final by South Glamorgan.  Well done to everyone.

Meanwhile back at the club, our ever improving ladies team won 10-0 at Blaina, then beat Brynmawr at home 8-2, a great 9-1 win over Trelewis at home and a 6-4 victory over Merthyr west End at home was followed by a 8-2 victory over Gilwern. An excellent set of results that sees our ladies second and third in their respective leagues, a massive well done to you all.

Our mixed team played Guest Memorial in the semi final at Abergavenny and won a place in next weeks final against Whitchurch, again well done to everyone who supported this venture and good luck next week.

The West Mon League side beat Six Bells at home 14-0 to set up a big top on the league clash with Blaina which they also won 12-2 to win the league, a really great achievement with a blend of new and experienced bowlers taking part and stands us in good stead for the future.

The MBA side suffered two 14-0 defeats against Ynysddu and Machen before putting up a good fight losing 10-4 to Abergavenny.  Unfortunately this means they are relegated to division 4 next season but some promising performances in this league should give them confidence to compete next year and hopefully bounce back up the leagues.

Our PG team have continued to impress and after a 12-2 victory at home to Ystradfechan a much stiffer test away to Whitchurch was also passed with flying colours and another 12-2 victory secures our place in division 2 and puts us right in the mix for a promotion spot or even champions with three home games to come. Well done guys.

 

Week 16

This week began with our open pairs competition and we are truly grateful to everyone who helped make the day a great success.  Our club once again showing we can host events as good as any.  Congratulations to all the players who took part and particularly the new champions, Paul Williamson and Steve Batten, and finalists Owain and Kailea Dando.

The following day we hosted the semi finals of the ladies county competition and again we are very grateful to everyone who helped make this another success. Congratulations to all the ladies who moved on to county finals.

Our ladies then continued their recent good form with a 8-2 victory over Bedwellty.

Our West Mon team suffered another defeat at Rhymney Royal 14-0, despite some very tight rink scores, the point all slipped away from us.  We still sit top of the table but it is looking like a winner takes all battle at Blaina a week wednesday to decide the title.

Friday our senior fours went to Llandrindod Wells to compete in the national finals and despite a spirited preformance fell just short by one shot to the Havelock Park team.

With several players missing, our teams were somewhat depleted on the weekend and the knockon effect to our MBA team was quite clear as they were heavily defeated by a good Ynysddu team at home 14-0.

The PG team though did manage to hold on for a 10-4 victory at Barry Athletic and are now in a good position to at least maintain division 2 status next season.

This week sees more national championship games and we wish the guys all the best at Llandrindod, Roger Jones goes Tuesday in the open singles and our senior pairs go on Wednesday.

Week 15

The ladies carried on their good form on Tuesday evening with a 8-2 win at Abertillery.

We lost our one hundred percent record on Wednesday in the West Mon league losing 10-4 at home to Llanhilleth. We are still in the hunt though with three games to go.

Thursday the ladies had a difficult away trip to Trelewis and lost 8-2.

Another super Saturday when we fielded all three teams in the PG, MBA and GBL.

The PG team had a good win at home to Troedyrhiw by 12-2, the MBA team had a tough day at Bedwellty losing 14-0 and the GBL boys won at home to Oakdale 8-2.

Today, Sunday, we host our annual open pairs competition, there are some high quality bowlers on show and refreshments served all day.  The weather is set fair so come on up the green and enjoy the bowls and beer.
Week 14

This week proved to be a great week for our ladies, they beat Brynmawr 8-2 at home on Tuesday, Abertillery 8-2 at home on Wednesday and Crickhowell 10-0 at home on Wednesday, well done ladies.

Also on Wednesday our West Mon team travelled to Abertillery for a tough encounter and also recorded a win by 12-2 to stay top of the league.

Friday saw the last mixed league match and an excellent 4-1 win at Whitchurch.  The team finish on top of the table and will now face Abertillery in the semi final next month.

Saturday our PG team travelled to Gilfach and with a few guys missing came unstuck by 12-2, the two points gained could prove to be invaluable when the league is completed, well done guys.

Saturday was also county finals day and a great day was had by everyone at Abergavenny.  The club were well represented and came away with three county titles.  Pride of place goes to Roger Jones who won the open singles title again, Roger has a remarkable record in this competition and played superbly to defeat Beaufort old boy Chris Klefenz in this final.  Roger also skipped the senior fours to victory, ably assisted by Clive Williams, Paul Hayden and Peter Williams. Clive and Peter also went on to collect a double picking up the senior pairs title. They are all to be congratulated and go to Llandrindod next month in a bid to add the Welsh titles to their accomplishments.

Week 13

Apologies for being a bit late this week, the ladies started the week well winning 6-4 at Merthyr West End but then suffered two 8-2 defeats, firstly ay Guest Memorial and then at home to Merthyr. They are sitting third in the afternoon league and seventh in the evening league.

Our West Mon team continued their one hundred percent season beating local rivals RTB 11-3 and sit proudly at the top of the table.

Friday saw the mixed team record a very good 4.5-0.5 win at Abergavenny to secure a semi final spot, well done everyone.

A mixed Saturday with the MBA team recording an excellent 14-0 win over Abertillery, this puts us back in touching distance of the other clubs and a few more performances like that could see us escape relegation.  The GBL team lost 10-0 at Blackwood, a difficult green to play on but still had a go and only lost by 10 shots over all.
Week 12

A relatively quiet week for the club with Tuesdays ladies match postponed and no match in west Mon league Wednesday, Thursday the ladies won 8-2 at Brynmawr. Again no mixed fixture this week and no PG game Saturday, so MBA side beat Llanhilleth at home 13-1 and GBL team won 8-2 at St Julians. It was great to see captain Dave Jones leading his team to victory and talking enthusiastically about the game again, keep it going guys.

The county comps semi finals were concluded this week and we have had a mixed bag of results. Both open fours were narrowly defeated as was Aaron in the singles, they can all be proud of themselves for reaching the semis in such a strong county.

Finalists and Welsh qualifiers include Roger Jones, open singles, Clive and Peter in the O60 pairs and Clive, Paul, Peter and Roger in the O55 rinks, well done guys and good luck in the county finals and the nationals in Llandrindod Wells.

Today we host the Penyglyn champion of champions and wish our representative, Alison, all the best in this competition.
Week 11

A super eight match at Ferndale was a tough start to the week but the guys put up a good fight before losing 42-28.

Another good fighting performance on Wednesday saw our west Mon team maintain their 100% record and stay top of the table after beating second place Blaina 10-4.

Thursday saw the ladies win at Troedyrhiw 8-2 with some very good performances.

Friday the mixed team continued their recent good form beating Barry Athletic 4-1 at home.

Saturday a hastily rearranged fixture against a good Gilfach side saw our PG team record another win 12-2. Our MBA team had some good performances but found Blaina on their own green a tough ask and lost 14-0.

All in all another good week for the club, keep it going guys and gals, “UP THE FORT”. 
Week 10

A rearranged PG1 game saw us pick up four points at Barry Romilly, not a bad return against a tough opponent on their own green, Barry Romilly 10, Beaufort 4.

The ladies recorded another win on Tuesday 6-4 against Gilwern.

Wednesday our West Mon team continued their impressive start beating Six Bells 11-3 away from home.

We also had our over 55 fours competing in the British Championships and they lead all the way in the semi final against Ireland until the last end when Ireland pulled level at 14-14, the Irish then picked up one on the extra end to go into the final against England, which they won 22-5. So close but so far, well done guys.

Thursday the ladies match was cancelled but we returned to mixed league action on Friday and another good 4-1 win over Troedyrhiw at the fort. This keeps us top of the table and in a good position to qualify for the semi finals again.

Saturday was a full program, starting with PG1, a tough trip to Ystradfechan saw another good performance from the team collecting a 10-4 win. The MBA team lost 12-2 at home to Machen and the GBL team lost 8-2 to Bailey Park.

Week 9

We hosted the over sixty county championship team on Tuesday and team manager Clive Williams was delighted to record another win and qualify for Llandrindod Wells with a game to spare.

The ladies put up a good fight at Trelewis and lost 7-3, a good return against strong opposition.

An exciting finish to the west Mon match on Wednesday as we came back to pip last years champions, Rhymney Royal by one shot and kept out one hundred percent record this year winning 10-4.

The ladies bounced back Thursday beating Blaina 8-2 at home. Friday the mixed team recorded another 4-1 win at Ystrad Mynach.

Saturday we had all three teams competing, PG1 side beating Whitchurch 12-2, MBA team lost at Abergavenny 12-2 and the GBL team lost 10-0 at Croesyceiliog.

Week 8

As reported last week Sunday saw us hosting the Savegar Cup match between Penyglyn and South Wales and Monmouthshire, congratulations to the ladies from our club who were involved in the game which saw Penyglyn secure 4 points to SW&M 18, a creditable performance against a strong team.  Also well done to everyone involved in catering, bar duties, green duties and generally making our club a great host.

Tuesday saw the ladies team back in action and suffered a home defeat to Blaina 45-50 and getting 2 points to 8.

Wednesday is West Mon League day and our good start to the season continued with some good performances in a 12 - 2 win at Llanhilleth, more headaches for our selectors with some quality bowls from a number of guys knocking on the door for recognition in the first sixteen next Saturday.

The ladies match on Thursday was washed out as our poor weather continues and we can only hope summer season kicks in soon.

Our resurgence in the mixed league continued with a very good 4-1 win at Guest Memorial, the win puts us back in contention for a top four finish but with some very tricky fixtures coming up we need to be at our very best over the next few weeks.

Friday night turned very wet and on a difficult evening in Pontnewydd we came unstuck with the old problem of our players trying to play nice bowls on a slow surface, congratulations to the Pontnewydd guys who mastered the conditions better than us and also showed an enthusiasm to get over the winning line.  We wish them well in the next round and the remainder of the season.

Saturday our MBA match was off due to Ynysddu playing Carruthers and a rearranged friendly with Bedwellty Park was washed out too, remarkably only a few miles across the valleys we enjoyed a bright afternoon at Troedyrhiw, it was very pleasing to see our guys bounce back and a great spirited performance saw us secure a 12-2 win in the private greens league. only narrowly missing out on all 14.

Looking forward to this week, our club host the O60 championship team on Tuesday, we have several guys involved in the latter stages of the county competitions and our usual array of fixtures for members to take part in, names on sheets please ladies and gents.

Week 7

Week 6

Unfortunately our friendly with Mountain Ash on Monday was postponed as was the ladies match against Abertillery on Tuesday.

Wednesday saw us open our West Mon League fixtures, with a 12 points to 2 win at local rivals RTB Ebbw Vale.

Thursday our ladies had a hard battle at Merthyr West End but managed 2 points in a 8-2 defeat.

Friday our mixed team returned a very creditable 4-1 victory against a strong Rhiwbina team. Some of the guys then played again in a very good Monmouthshire Cup match at Bedwas & Trethomas and another very good performance saw us win by 9 shots.  The draw for the next round has been made and we face a difficult trip to one of the rejuvenated teams at Pontnewydd.

Saturday saw our MBA team have a tough day at Abertillery only managing 1 point, full credit to our hosts who mastered the tricky surface much better than us.

The GBL team had a much better day securing all ten points at Pontypool Park.

The club remain in a very good position and look forward to competing for the rest of the season.

Week 5

The club played host to the county O60 team on Tuesday, a good day for the club and special thanks are due to the many members who helped make this day a success. The green, the catering and the bar service all helped to make it a great day for the club.  Also a good start on the green for the new team manager who was thrilled with a narrow victory over a strong Mid Glamorgan team, congratulations Clive.

Our ladies travelled to Brynmawr Tuesday evening and recorded a 9-1 victory in the penyglyn evening league although the return fixture was cancelled on Thursday afternoon with our opponents unable to field a team.

Saturday was another great day at the club and we have a good indication of where we are as a team, with a 22 shot defeat at home to RTB, they have a lot of strength throughout the team and were well deserved victors. Hopefully a lot of our guys will have learnt about the small step up required to put us back in contention in the near future. Congratulations to RTB and good luck in your quest to retain the shield.

Better news for our GBL team who started with a 10-0 victory at Ynysddu.

Week 4

The week was supposed to start with a celebration match at Beaufort with the MBA President against the WLB President, unfortunately the poor weather meant this match was postponed and hopefully will now be played later in the season.

The ladies played Guest Memorial on Tuesday but were beaten scoring 36 shots to 52 and gaining 2 points to 8.  They then had their first win of the season on Thursday beating Troedyrhiw by 51 shots to 35 gaining 8 points to 2.

Another disappointing result in the mixed league at Abertillery with a very narrow 42-43 defeat gaining 2 points to 3.  A spirited effort on a tricky green but we will need to improve if we are to try and retain our title in this event.

Saturday was the second round of the Carruthers and another potential banana skin trip to Llanhilleth, a generally solid performance saw us victorious by 93 shots to 73. There was much excitement when the draw for the next round was made with us having a home tie against the current Welsh champions and local rivals RTB Ebbw Vale, a great test of where we are as a team at the moment.

Week 3

The week began with a friendly game against our friends from Havelock Park Vets, great bunch of guys and a good day was had by all.

Tuesday we had the county O60 trial on our green and another good day for the club, good bowls on show to give the selectors a headache in picking a team.

Penyglyn evening game on Tuesday was postponed and a new date will be posted when we get one. The ladies finally kicked off their season in the Penyglyn afternoon league on Thursday, an away fixture at Gilwern resulted in a 38-58 defeat picking up 2 points to 8.

Friday we started our defence of the South Wales Mixed league title with a tough away game at Barry Romilly, we recieved a very warm welcome and hospitality.  The green was one of the best surfaces we have played on this season by far, we gave a good account of ourselves before finally dropping to a 52-58 defeat collecting 1 point to 4.

Saturday saw the start of the Monmouthshire knockout games for the Carruthers shield, we had a potential banana skin away to New Tredegar, a club on the up with a number of young enthusiastic bowlers, sure they will be competing at a higher level pretty soon. Our guys started slow and things look very ominous during the early exchanges, but they kept fighting and got on terms in the middle section of the match and hanging on to secure a fort shot victory, 83-79. Again a great welcome and hospitality, we wish the New Tredegar boys all the best for the rest of the season.

Staurday evening the draw for the next round gives us another trip to Llanhilleth, where we played last week, but we will take nothing for granted as the Llan boys will be looking for quick revenge of their league defeat last week.
Week 2

I am looking at putting a weekly report on here to inform everyone of progress, maybe members could let me know what you think so that I am not wasting time. We can start here with WEEK 1. A great initiative this week when our club linked up with the local group of "YOUR NEVER ALONE", a group designed to help men with mental health and well being.  We had a walk of approximately six miles and returned to the club for an hour on the green bowling. Refreshments were then taken in the club and an enjoyable day had by all. It is hoped this venture will continue in the future as there are obvious advantages to both organizations and the participants as well.

Season 2023

Expectation was lower this year after several very experienced players decided to leave the club this season.  With a few more following this year it is a time for those stalwarts that are left to stick together and do our very best to rebuild our team as best we can.  The club itself is still in a very good shape and I am confident we can soon get the team back to where we would like to be too.

PG1

It is fair to say that after winning division 1 last year it was a very disappointing season and finishing bottom with just the one victory was difficult.  The good news is that we will now compete this year in the 2^nd division which is now a very good league with a lot of good teams involved.  I am hopeful we can apply ourselves to this task and at least hold our own at this level and maybe push for a return to division one next year.

MBA 3

A mixed bag in this league with a few important wins when the team were strengthened when PG games didn’t clash.  Valuable experience has been gained by our squad and hopefully we can build on this and again hold our own and maybe push for a return to division 2.

GBL3

A new venture for the club in the two rink GBL league which proved a good success giving some of our members some much needed games and experience.

WML

Slightly lower in the league than our club has become accustomed but a mixture of experienced and newer members taking part in this league will prove invaluable going forward as there are quite a few promising players in there just needing some more experience and knowledge.

Ladies

A fantastic season for our ladies who competed in both the Pen Y Glyn leagues this year, they won the evening league, their first win ever, and finished mid table in the afternoon league.  It is great to see our ladies improving and I look forward to see how they go this year.

Mixed League

This has proved to be a very enjoyable league for all those who take part.  After winning this competition last year it was going to be a tough ask to do it again, but we did.  Well done to all concerned.

Competitions

Despite our disappointing team results this year we still managed some success on the competition front.

MBA County finals day was littered with our brick shirts with Aaron Rees a finalist in the champion of champion singles, Mike Perkins and Darren O’Callaghan were finalists in the O’60 pairs and Nigel Harris, Paul Hayden and Darren O’Callaghan were finalists in the O60 triples.

Roger Jones and Daniel Davies Jnr. are county pairs champions and Clive Williams, Paul Hayden, Peter Williams and Steve Batten are county O’55 rink champions.

Most of these guys went on to represent the county at the national finals and it was great to see so many of our shirts at Llandrindod Wells.

With Darren O’Callaghan on holiday they had to play a reserve in both the O60 pairs and triples.

O60 Pairs. Mike Perkins and Tony Musgrave played very well but lost their first game to the eventual champions from Harlequins.

O60 Triples. Tom Moodie, Nigel Harris and Paul Hayden had a tough first game against a strong Whitchurch outfit and also lost their first game.

Pairs. Roger Jones and Daniel Davies Jnr. had a great win in their first game against one of our former members Ryan Davies in their first match before losing the quarter final against Llanbradach.

O55 Rinks. Clive Williams, Paul Hayden, Peter Williams and Steve Batten started well with a win over Llantrsant before beating Barry Romilly in the quarter final.  They had a narrow win in the semi final against Gilfach Goch to make the final against a much-fancied Ferndale rink. It was another tight match as expected but our guys held their nerve to record a very narrow victory and are the new Welsh champions, a great achievement for our club.  They carry our best wishes as they will represent Wales in the British Championships in Leamington Spa in June.

Not to be outdone our ladies also featured well in the Penyglyn county competitions with the semi final greens littered with beaufort shirts.  The triple of Paula Denby, Cheryl Prosser and Alison Hayden progressed to be finalists and are to be congratulated.  Another indication that our ladies are continuing to improve.

 

What a Season 2022

A great first season in  the private greens division one doing better than anyone could have imagined and lifting the title.  A little disappointing to suffer a narrow defeat at Harlequins in the Carruthers last sixteen but another decent effort.  The MBA team were disappointed to suffer relegation but will soon find a level and enjoy their bowls.  The West Mon team were a little lower than usual but a good grounding for many of our players.

In competitions we have new Welsh champions in Ryan Davies the Welsh U25 singles champion and Daniel Davies Jnr, & Chris Klefenz the Welsh Pairs champions.  In the county we had many finalists which meant there were a lot of representation at Llandrindod, Daniel and Chris did the double winning the county pairs beating Ryan Davies and Roger Jones in the final.  Clive Williams and Peter Williams won the O60 pairs while Clive and Ryan had to settle for runner up in their O60 and U25 singles final.

An added bonus for Daniel Davies Jnr. was picking up the coveted Tenby Gold Cup, a great achievement.

An unusually low representation for us in the West Mon finals but congratulations to Lewys Thomas who won the U25 singles and then teamed up with Jon Norris as finalists in the pairs.

With that success came representative honours with Chris Klefenz representing Wales in the European championships in Scotland and Ryan Davies representing Wales in the junior championships in Ireland, which Wales won, fantastic season.

We also had a number of players in the county team who won the Welsh county championship and also in the senior county team who also won the Welsh senior county championship.  While there were a number of our players in the West Mon Association team who narrowly lost out on shot difference in the inter association championship.

All in all I would say a very good season for our club, well done everyone.

National Finals 2022

It was great to see the bricks at Llandrindod for the national finals, congratulations to all concerned.  Our fours never got into their stride and lost their first game but can still be proud of themselves for qualifying.

In the over 60 pairs, the guys did manage to win their first game before coming unstuck in the second game against the eventual Welsh Champions from Brecon.

In the open pairs we did exceptionally well getting both pairs through to the semi finals where Roger Jones and Ryan Davies narrowly lost to the Tenby pair.  Daniel Davies Jnr. and Chris Klefenz went on to take the title and are now the Welsh pairs champions and will represent Wales at the BIBC next year, fantastic result guys.

In the U25 singles, Ryan Davies continued to excel and has reached the semi final, although very disappointingly this has now been postponed until September.  We wish Ryan all the best for this event and hope he can go on and join the guys in the BIBC next year.

B.I.B.C. Championships 2022

Due to some nations not having national competitions last year, Wales have to have a playoff between the 2019 champions and last years champions to see who will represent us at the B.I.B.C. in June.  This means that Aaron Rees our 2021 U25 WBA Champion will play R. Atkins of Llandrindod Wells for a place in the BIBC.  The full program can be found here.

Congratulations to Lewys Thomas who has been selected for the WBA academy squad session to be held at Llandrindod Wells on Sunday 8th May.  Good luck mate.  The full squad can be found here.

 AGM 2020

Considering the circumstances, a very successful AGM was held via zoom last week and many thanks to Adam for arranging it.  The main points for members to be aware of is that both the secretary and fixture secretary have decided to stand down which is a great shame for us because they are both young capable and enthusiastic members of the management team.  I would like to thank Adam KIng and Danny Davies for their services over the last few years and hope they will rejoin the team at some point in the future.  In true Beaufort tradition though, other members have stood up to help the cause and I am sure you will all join me in congratulating and welcoming our new secretary MIke Perkins and our new fixture secretary Chris Melia.  Most of the team otherwise remains pretty much the same giving us stability going forward and there are also two new committee men standing up and I would also welcome Tom Moodie and Mike Wilcox to the team, I am sure they will both be great assets to us.
